In the 2024 presidential and parliamentary general election, some polling stations in the Kusaaug traditional area reported that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia received zero votes. The Kusaaug traditional area comprises Binduri, Garu, Pusiga, Tempane, Bawku, and Zebilla.
This occurred after a renewed conflict in the Bawku Municipality between the Kusaasis and Mamprusis in the area.
Some groups of tribes believe that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, being a Mamprusi by tribe, is behind the killing of innocent lives in Bawku and Walewale, respectively. Others voted against the NPP party due to the poor governance of Nana Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
In the recently concluded election, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia recorded zero (0) votes in 25 polling stations in the Kusaaug traditional area. Some of the polling stations include Naranzua Primary School, Sabongari, Nayorko 2, among others.
The paramount chief of the Kusaaug Traditional Council, Zug-raan Bawku Naaba Asigiri Abugrago Azoka II, requested support for the Kusaaug region if John Dramani Mahama is elected as President of the Republic of Ghana. This request, along with the many lost lives, made the people of Kusaaug vote massively for JM, hoping for lasting peace to return to Bawku.
Speaking to the media, the Hon. Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, highlighted the reason for Dr. Bawumia’s zero votes in some polling stations.
The incumbent MP, Mahama Ayariga, retained his seat with 25,350 votes against the NPP parliamentary candidate’s 3,855, giving him a difference of 21,495 votes.
Meanwhile, Bawku central Constituency recorded 6,277 rejected ballots in the just ended election 2024 in the Bawku Central.
