An Open Letter to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces: A Call to Action Against Military Brutalities in Bawku

To His Excellency the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces,

We, the citizens of the Upper East Community in the Central Region of Ghana, are compelled to express our utmost condemnation of the brutalities perpetrated by the Ghana Armed Forces against innocent civilians in Bawku. The military’s actions have resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of properties, and a breakdown in trust between the military and the local community.

Despite the Ghana Armed Forces’ exemplary record in international peacekeeping missions, their failure to protect the people of Ghana raises serious concerns. The military’s inability to combat galamsey, a menace that has devastated our environment, is particularly alarming.

*Key Failures of the Ghana Armed Forces:*

– *Inability to Combat Galamsey*: The military’s failure to stop galamsey has led to the destruction of our water bodies and environment.
– *Failure to Protect Innocent Lives*: The military’s presence in Bawku since 2021 has not prevented the killings of innocent people, which continue to occur on a daily basis.
– *Inability to Apprehend Perpetrators*: The military has failed to apprehend perpetrators of crimes, instead targeting innocent civilians.
– *Lack of Intelligence Gathering*: The military’s actions demonstrate a lack of intelligence gathering, leading to the destruction of properties and harm to innocent people.

In light of these failures, we demand the following:

– The immediate withdrawal of all military personnel from the Kusaug Traditional Area.
– The Ghana Armed Forces should be ashamed of their actions and leave Kusaug immediately.
– If peacekeeping is necessary in Kusaug, we prefer that armed forces from different countries undertake this responsibility, rather than the Ghana Armed Forces.

We demand justice for the victims of military brutality and call for a thorough investigation into the actions of the Ghana Armed Forces in Bawku. It is time for the military to reclaim its reputation as a protector of the people, rather than a source of fear and intimidation.
