Bolgatanga Traditional Council Meets Regional Minister, Urges Resolution to Chieftaincy Dispute

The Bolgatanga Traditional Council has appealed to Upper East Regional Minister Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga to expedite efforts to resolve a longstanding chieftaincy dispute that has left the area without a substantive chief for years.

The plea came during a meeting on Tuesday between the council, led by acting president Naba Patrick Asaliya III, Chief of Yarikabisi, and the newly appointed minister.

The council congratulated Hon. Akamugri on his role as the president’s representative in the region but stressed the urgent need to address the chieftaincy vacuum in Bolgatanga, the regional capital.

Naba Asaliya III highlighted that the dispute, currently pending in court, risks destabilizing governance and development efforts.

The council further urged closer collaboration with the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to resolve land disputes and other challenges requiring traditional authority input.

In response, Hon. Akamugri acknowledged the broader impact of unresolved chieftaincy conflicts across the Upper East Region, describing Bolgatanga’s situation as critical.

He emphasized dialogue and legal processes to ensure peace, adding that President John Mahama’s upcoming visit to the region would provide an opportunity to brief him on the crisis and seek executive support.

The minister assured the council of his commitment to “work tirelessly” with stakeholders.
