The recent decision by the Regional Security Council (RESEC), chaired by the regional minister, to impose a curfew on Binduri its environs is both unwarranted and politically motivated. This decision, reportedly influenced by the North East RESEC, reflects a careless approach to addressing the ongoing conflicts in our region.
It is alarming that while civilians in Bawku have recently faced brutal attacks, many beaten senselessly and significant property damage incurred—including the theft of millions of cedis from private residences by military personnel—the regional minister and the government have remained notably silent. This glaring lack of response indicates a troubling bias against the Kusasis and their supporters.
The imposed curfew is not only senseless but also detrimental. It will disrupt educational institutions, health facilities, and numerous businesses, rendering travel to Bolgatanga, Tamale, and Kumasi impossible. Sick individuals will be unable to access clinics during curfew hours, as motorcycle transport is prohibited. Additionally, this period coincides with significant cultural rites, including funerals, during which the wearing of smocks (traditional attire) is customary. Such restrictions on our cultural practices are utterly unacceptable.
We urgently call on the authorities to reconsider this decision immediately.
Furthermore, we have encountered a troubling video circulating on social media that features a leader from Gbimsi, a North East village, arranging the delivery of foodstuffs to Bawku, referring to the imposter Seidu Abagre, as Bawku Naba. This raises serious questions: Are the authorities permitting anyone to assert chieftaincy in our territory? Are they endorsing the illegitimate actions of the Nayiri and his associates? If not, why are authorities silent on this urgent matter? Such behavior should be condemned, and the law must take its course.
We the people of Kusaug demand that the items from Gbimsi be thoroughly searched before entering Kusaug, as we the Kusaug Heritage Defenders, believe weapons are concealed within these items destined for Bawku. We insist on being present during this search. We will not stand idly by while one group attempts to impose its will on us; we are dedicated to protecting our rights and the cultural values of Kusaug at all costs.
As Kusaug Heritage Defenders, we question why the supposed chief, Seidu Abagre, continues to hold his position in Bawku, especially given the ongoing loss of innocent lives due to his presence. The government neglects the concerns of the Kusaug people; yet, we remain steadfast in our commitment to uphold our heritage and safeguard Kusaug.
We call on the government and the Minister of the Interior to reassess their decision regarding the curfew on Binduri and its environs to focus on addressing the root causes of the unrest by taking decisive action against the imposter chief, Seidu Abagre. Only through such actions can peace be restored, rather than through ineffective measures that exacerbate tensions.
During his campaign, President Mahama assured us that he would uphold the law and address the issues surrounding the imposter chief. We now ask: why has this commitment not been fulfilled?
As law-abiding citizens, we Kusaug Heritage Defenders seek to witness justice served and the rule of law upheld.
