The chiefs and people of the Katiu traditional area in the Kassena-Nankana West district have made a heartfelt appeal for the expansion of the rural electrification program to their community.
During a courtesy visit by the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, the Paramount Chief of Katiu, Pe Ayikode Zangbeo Atoge IV, highlighted several critical needs of the community.
He urged the government to upgrade the local clinic to a fully functional hospital, improve the road network, and construct dams to support animal rearing and crop farming, given the community’s heavy reliance on agriculture.
In response, Hon. Akamugri acknowledged the importance of the rural electrification program, which he said was initiated by the National Democratic Congress, and assured the community of the government’s commitment to extending electricity coverage to Katiu.
He emphasized that access to electricity would enable residents to establish small businesses such as welding shops, provision shops, bars, and eateries, thereby boosting local economic activity.
Regarding the request to upgrade the clinic to a hospital, the Regional Minister promised to forward the appeal to the President for immediate consideration.
On the issue of constructing dams for agricultural purposes, he mentioned the government’s upcoming “Irrigation for Creating Wealth” program, which aims to benefit agrarian communities like Katiu by enhancing irrigation infrastructure for improved farming and livestock activities.
The Minister’s assurances brought hope to the community, as they look forward to tangible improvements in healthcare, infrastructure, and agricultural productivity.
