The Binduri Constituency in the Upper East Region elected Lawyer Yusif Mamud as the Member of Parliament for Binduri Constituency in the just-ended general election.
In the 2020 general election, Binduri voted for Alhaji Abanga Abdullai of the NPP as the Member of Parliament for the area, making him the only surviving NPP MP in the Upper East Region. He was then appointed Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development.
In the 2024 election, he represented the NPP in the Binduri Constituency.
Speaking to Dwumfour News, the NDC Constituency Chairman, Hon. Akudugu Martin Ariku, thanked the NDC party members in the constituency for supporting the good policies of JM Mahama and the NDC party. According to him, “it wasn’t an easy contest against the only NPP MP in the entire region.”
For his part, the NPP parliamentary candidate had all the logistics and support from their party to retain the seat, but with the efforts of the Chairman and his executive team, they were able to defeat the NPP by a huge margin, given the significant history of Binduri. In the history of democracy, no member of Parliament from Binduri has ever served for two terms or more. It has always been one-term MPs.
In the 2024 general election, the people of Binduri were looking to see if Hon. Abanga Abdullai could break that one-term record. However, the policies of John Dramani Mahama and the NDC party led Hon. Abanga Abdullai to follow the one-term process.
The Binduri Constituency member of Parliament-elect, Lawyer Yusif Mamud, gave the incumbent NPP MP a difference of 14,000 votes, while John Dramani Mahama gave Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia a difference of 23,000 votes in the just-ended election, making the entire Upper East Region green 15/15.
