A non-governmental organization operating in Ghana, ActionAid Ghana, has donated seven hundred school tables and chairs to ten schools within the Binduri District to ease the furniture deficit in the area.

This comes after some schools in the district faced a shortage of tables and chairs. Speaking to Atungo Iddrisu Kassim about the furniture deficit, the headteacher of Binduri Primary School A, Mr. Akolbilla Godwin, appealed to the government, non-governmental organizations, and other agencies to come to their aid in addressing the furniture deficit situation in the district. According to him, school children sit on the floor and mats to learn in classrooms.

While presenting the furniture to the Binduri District Deputy Director of Supervision, Mr. John Nkaw, the ActionAid Ghana Country Director highlighted the reason behind the support of furniture in basic schools across the country, particularly in the Binduri District.

According to him, Ghana is currently facing a furniture deficit of about 2.3 million pieces in most of its school systems, and Binduri is not exempt from this deficit. It appears that almost all the schools in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region have a furniture deficit. For his part, ActionAid Ghana will continue to support the government in girl child education and provide opportunities for women to enhance their lives in a better way and to promote gender equality in schools and workplaces.

He therefore called on the government to improve the budgetary allocation for the district assembly to ensure that districts are able to provide educational infrastructure adequately.

He finally appealed to other INGOs to come in to support, as ActionAid Ghana is currently doing for school-going children to enhance quality education.

Asuma Albert, a beneficiary school representative, thanked ActionAid Ghana for their support and how this will help the beneficiary schools in the district. According to him, as a teacher, he recounted how some schools are struggling during class hours. For his part, children lie on their stomachs, while others sit on blocks to learn in classrooms, which is very detrimental to their health and education. Therefore, this donation will go a long way to improve healthcare and education in the district.

Meanwhile, the Binduri District Assembly has also acquired 150 pieces of furniture to help address the furniture deficit in the Binduri District. This was made known to the public through the District Engineer, Mr. Edem, during his presentation.
