Youth in Bawku Central, along with the chiefs and elders of the area, have threatened to unseat Hon. Mahama Ayariga in the 2028 general election.
A group calling themselves “freedom fighters,” in consultation with the traditional authorities, has hinted that the people of Bawku regret voting for John Dramani Mahama and Mahama Ayariga, the Bawku Central MP and Majority Leader.
This was made known to the public through a press conference organized by the youth in Bawku.
The press conference stated the following:
“We want to bring to your notice, Mr. President, and the general public about the continuous unprofessional conduct of the military in Bawku and its suburbs!
We, the Kusaas, are peace-loving people, but we are running out of patience with the way the NDC government has been mute on the Bawku conflict while people keep losing their precious lives.
Under this NDC government, several press conferences have been organized by various groups in Kusaug condemning the unprofessional military brutality in Bawku.”
In these press conferences, we pleaded with the government to ensure that this unprofessional conduct of the military be stopped, but all these pleas have fallen on deaf ears with the NDC government, just as the previous government did! We realized that under this NDC government, military brutality in Bawku has been intensified even more than under the previous government.
On the 28th of March, 2025, a group of military personnel was seen beating Kusaasi women in the Kusaasi market square. This occurred because the military guided Mamprusi women into the Kusaasi market square to buy foodstuffs, and the Kusaasi women refused to sell to them, which led to the beating of the Kusaasi women by the military in their own market square! As we address the nation today, some of the women are still receiving treatment in the hospital.
We want to know who ordered the military to conduct this barbaric act in the Kusaasi market square! We encourage our women in the Kusaasi market square not to sell even a leaf to the Mamprusi, even if the military escorts them into the Kusaasi market; don’t sell anything to them. If any Kusaasi woman is caught selling anything to the Mamprusis, we will treat you like a Mampru poa!
Just three weeks ago, the military went into the communities within the Bawku enclaves, beating everyone, including the aged, and destroying televisions, fridges, window glass, and other gadgets. Is this what the NDC government is awarding Kusaug with for voting massively for them in the last elections?
We want to send a strong warning to the military to desist from this biased and unprofessional act that they are committing against us Kusaas; if not, the gods of the land will start again. The military is defying the orders of Zugraan, the overlord of Kusaug.
The overlord of Kusaug passed an order that there should be no inter-trading between Kusaas and Mamprusis until things return to normalcy. But why are the military escorting Mamprusis into the Kusaas market to trade? We will invoke the gods of the land again to defend our women and the vulnerable.
Your Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, we Kusaas want to register our displeasure to you for delaying the fulfillment of your promise to bring a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict.
During your campaign tour last year, you visited the overlord of Kusaug in his palace and made an emphatic statement to Kusaug, to Ghanaians, and to the whole world. This was what you said, and I quote: “There is no chieftaincy conflict in Bawku. There cannot be two kings in one kingdom. Every government recognizes that the overlord of Bawku is Naaba Abugraugo Asigiri Azoka II. And that is why I said there is no chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.”There cannot be two kings in one kingdom. Every government recognizes that the overlord of Bawku is Naaba Abugraugo Asigiri Azoka II. And that is why I said there is no chieftaincy conflict in Bawku. Therefore, peace in Bawku is going to be my number one priority when I become president.”
Mr. President, these were your words. And now you are the president of the republic, yet the issues in Bawku are still being massaged under your government, just as the previous government did.
Mr. President, when we heard your promise to bring a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict, we were overwhelmed by it and thought the NDC was our savior. That is why Kusaug gave the NPP zeros and voted massively for you and the NDC.
Mr. President, you indeed mentioned the truth that the overlord, Naaba Abugraugo Asigiri Azoka II, is the legitimate chief of Kusaug, and everyone knows that. Now, what has changed, Mr. President?
We didn’t know it would take you so long to solve the Bawku issue when we voted you into power.
We now realize that politicians are using the Bawku conflict for their selfish political gains. Politicians keep deceiving us with their false promises to bring lasting peace to Bawku just to get us to vote them into power. It will surprise politicians to see empty ballot boxes without a single vote cast come 2028. We are now tired of the false promises of politicians.
Your Excellency, the President, did you know that since your assumption of office, about 18 people have been killed in the Bawku conflict, including women and children? Is that what you want, Mr. President? Everyone in Kusaug thought that when you became president, the first thing you would do is arrest the fugitive Seidu Abagre and ensure that documents are filed to end this conflict forever.
But to our surprise, the NDC government is also massaging the Bawku conflict just as the NPP government did. Mr. President, your promise to Kusaug must be fulfilled immediately without delay to prevent further escalation of tension in the Bawku area. We want to, by this press, plead with Otumfour to hasten bringing a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict to prevent further loss of lives.
We Kusaas are very much aware that the MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, is behind all the atrocities that are going on in Bawku currently. He sat on TV stations telling the whole world that his mother is a Mamprusi. During your campaign tour in Pusiga last year, you mentioned that the Mamprusi are not the cause of the Bawku conflict but the NPP government. Knowing very well that it is the Mamprusi who caused the conflict but had their backing from the NPP government. When you said this, we realized that you were playing tricks on us.
Among the six MPs in Kusaug, you were the only one who came with the president to Zugraan Palace during the president’s thank-you tour. This act of yours raised a lot of concerns for us Kusaas! Did the other five MPs refuse to come, or were you prevented from coming? It was very suspicious when you came alone with the president. Therefore, it’s very clear that you are the one spearheading the message of the Bawku conflict for the NDC government.
Mahama Ayariga, your actions right now towards the Kusaas show that you are strongly behind your uncles, the Mamprusis. Your promise to Kusaug during your campaign tour last year does not conform with your actions after we voted you into power. If you were behaving this way before the 2024 elections, you wouldn’t get even a single vote in the ballot. You thought you had succeeded in deceiving us. You have been mute while your uncles, the Mamprusis in military uniform, went and killed the woman and her two children just a stone’s throw away from your house. You acted as if it was an animal that died. Again, regarding the military brutality recently in Bawku, you never said anything about it, which means you instructed the military to do that. You have intensified the escort of your uncles, the Mamprusis, aiding them in transporting ammunition into their territory to fight the Kusaas. Your time is up; this is not the kind of MP we want! You are very much aware that this is your last time in Parliament as our MP. We will never make a mistake again; we have learned our lesson.
To the National Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Asiedu Nketia, the Communications Officer, Hon. Sammy Gyemfi, and Mahama Ayariga, MP for Bawku Central: you are using the NDC government to also exacerbate the Bawku conflict. You must stand to your feet and ensure the NDC government brings a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict immediately. If not, what happened to the NPP in December 2024 will also happen to the NDC come December 2028.
DEMANDS BY THE GOOD PEOPLE OF KUSAUG
1. Seidu Abagre should be arrested immediately. The NDC government has just two weeks to arrest the fugitive Seidu Abagre, and due processes should be followed to end this conflict forever. If, after two weeks, the Bawku conflict is not resolved, then we demand the removal of the security forces in Bawku so that we can bring the conflict to an end. We are capable of bringing a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict if the government fails to do so.
2. We want the military to put a stop to the brutalities they are causing in Kusaug; if not, we will invoke the gods on them.
